Sprangprozessioun (Marjolaine Del Pino)

Acrylic on canvas

50cm x 50cm

Each year, on Tuesday after Whitsun, the hopping procession of Echternach takes place in the medieval town of Echternach, the oldest city in Luxembourg. Documented since the year 1100, the procession is founded on the cult of Saint Willibrord, a monk and founder of the Abbey of Echternach. The procession begins early in the morning in the courtyard of the ancient abbey, in the presence of the highest ecclesiastical authorities in the country and of many other countries. Singers recite litanies and then thousands of dancers take over. The hopping step is sideways and forward.  In the past, though, some pilgrims jumped three steps forward and two backwards. It ends with a service in the basilica.

On 16thof November 2010 the hopping procession of Echternach has been inscribed on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

The three villages of Rippig, Hemstal and Zittig, situated in the eastern part of Luxembourg and belonging today to the commune of Bech, have always been called the “Schwéngsgronn” (Pig Valley). Legend has it that on their way from Bech to Zittig hikers in the night often met a little white pig that accompanied them a while and then disappeared by a big pear tree in a place called “Schleet”.

In the church of Rippig stands a statue of Saint Anthony with a small white pig, and every year on 17th of January there is the fair of Saint Anthony.

Exposition Ki MOON, Event Gallery
